How to start an USGA Golf Club

Although a golf course is generally considered a prerequisite to starting a Golf Club, the USGA has set forth a separate designation for Clubs Without Real Estate.

To form your own golf club, e-mail the USGA at handicap@usga.org with your name and address to receive a FREE Club Formation Kit. Be sure to add "Club Formation Kit" in the subject heading of the email.

If your golf club wants to know the complete details of the USGA formula and how to go about forming a golf club, a lot of good information is available on the USGA Web Site!

How we formed the Apple Ridge Golf Club

About a dozen or so of us play with each other on a regular basis. But we tend to play a lot of different golf courses. Some of us kept handicaps at the local county courses using the GHIN system. It cost us each $21 a year, and we did not know our updated handicaps for weeks after posting scores.

So we ordered the USGA Handicap Manual (it was $5 at the time, the phone number is on their Web Site), and e-mailed the USGA at handicap@usga.org and received a FREE Club Formation Kit. The next step was to come up with By-Laws. So we went to the USGA Web Site, cut and paste the sample By-Laws into a Microsoft Word document, and adjusted them to our needs.

That's it! The USGA did not need to know about our individual club name, and there was no official registration process. It is up to the individuals in the designated USGA Golf Club to uphold the integrity of the game. We have named a handicap chairman and all the suggested "officers", and run our own golf club without Real Estate.

So we now print our Official USGA Handicap Cards using the American Golf System and the appropriate supplies. Then we post our Club Listing to the Web Site to satisfy peer review (this is where the Internet Publishing idea grew from!). We enter tournaments requiring official USGA handicaps and never have a problem with any events (i.e. the Buick Scramble).

This is the premise the American Golf System supports.
